About us
Okachimachi Street Association is a shopping street on both sides of Kasuga Street from Ueno Matsuzakaya to NTT. Located at Ueno 3, 4, 5, and 6-chome, it is a key transportation hub where not only JR Okachimachi Station but also three subway lines, the Ginza Line, Hibiya Line, and Oedo Line, intersect. It is a city full of attractive products and experiences, from fresh food to fashion, dining, luxury watches, and precious metals.
Our association has a long history, and has been bustling with people since before the war as a street association that connects JR Okachimachi Station and Matsuzakaya. In May 1951, Torikai also took shape as a shopping street, and an arcade was installed, and in March 1982, the arcade was renovated. The arcade was removed during the construction of the Oedo subway line, and after the opening of the Oedo line, it became the current open mall.

Greetings from the Chairman
Greetings
I am Iizuka, the president of the Okachimachi Street Association.
Do you know the etymology of Okachimachi in Taito Ward, Tokyo?
The name of Okachimachi is derived from the fact that Okachimachi was the town where Okachimachi lived after the capital was moved to Edo, walking at the front of the Daimyo's procession and taking responsibility for the safety of the procession, protecting the safety and security of Edo.
Therefore, all members of the Okachimachi Street Association are working hard every day to ensure that all visitors can spend their time in Okachimachi safely and happily.
We look forward to welcoming everyone.

History of Okachimachi Street Association
History

Edo
Many low-ranking samurai who guarded Edo Castle and the shogun lived in this neighborhood. Okachimachi is the origin of Okachimachi, which guards on foot instead of riding horses. The walkers, who could not cover their household expenses on their stipend (current salary), supported their livelihoods by doing small side jobs such as making sword guards. At that time, firefighters existed as firefighting organizations, and they were established as fire prevention and extinguishing systems to deal with frequent fires. It was divided into The current awareness of crime prevention in this town has been inherited since this time.
Showa
From the second half to the Taisho period, the Okachimachi area was lined with vaudeville theaters and spectacles, forming one of Tokyo's greatest entertainment districts. It was a very lively place, with beef, tempura, and oden stalls, restaurants, and entertainment such as shooting games and ball rolling. After the war, wholesale stores, restaurants, etc. opened, and the shape of the current shopping street was established. There are many shops that sell precision products such as jewelry and luxury watches. The anti-crime awareness of fire extinguishing has been passed down to this day, and safe and secure town development is being carried out, such as installing security cameras and conducting year-end crime prevention patrols.

Heisei
The arcade was removed during the construction of the Oedo Subway Line, and after the Oedo Line opened, it became the current open mall. Currently, the open mall is decorated, and the Christmas illumination at the end of the year has become a winter tradition in Ueno. The streets are now lined with modern buildings, but the old-fashioned shops convey a nostalgic atmosphere. With excellent access to temples and shrines, such as Ueno Park and Ueno Marishiten, which represent Japan, as well as shopping, this town is bustling with people day and night, from Heisei to Reiwa.
